Founded by two experts in the mental health industry, John Burnett and Tony Waddington, Stone in My Boot’s walking therapy, also known as "walk and talk" therapy, is an innovative approach that combines the benefits of physical activity with traditional counseling. Both of them have worked as BACP-registered therapeutic counsellors for many years now and through these years of experience they have realised that an outdoor short walking break can provide a more beneficial experience to anyone dealing with mental health matters. While they have spent a lot of time in the Lakes, visiting every year since they were children, both Tony and John say they continue to experience the same feelings every time they visit - excited, refreshed and free from the pressures of our daily lives. The Concept of Walking Therapy


Traditional therapy sessions typically occur in indoor settings usually behind a closed door in a glass office, which can sometimes feel restrictive, contained and less inspiring. With walking therapy we are trying to refresh this therapy model by taking it outdoors. The act of walking side by side with a therapist can foster a more relaxed environment, encouraging open dialogue and introspection. The rhythmic motions of walking combined with a calming natural surrounding can enhance mental clarity and emotional well-being. A wilderness walk to rebalance your thoughts and emotions, a great antidote for mental health struggles. 


Our Walking Therapy Programs


Our Three-Day Walking Therapy Retreat, is hosted at the picturesque Rydal Hall Estate in Ambleside. This retreat combines guided walks through the scenic Lake District with reflective activities, on-trail 1-2-1 private counselling sessions (personalised to your own mental health needs) and other well-being activities. This is then followed-up by another one-on-one counselling session after the retreat. These walking therapy retreats are an immersive experience designed for profound personal growth and renewal. These three day wellbeing walking retreats include meals and transportation to and from all walking venues, making the whole process seamless and convenient for you. We also offer an All Inclusive Three-Day Walking Therapy Retreat where lodging is also included in the package.
