As we evolve with technology our relationship with nature has started to weaken. How little time do we spend in a day taking in and appreciating our natural surroundings in contrast to scrolling through social media.
Staying connected online doesn't always bring about the human connection we crave. In the recent past it has led to an increase in anxiety and mental health issues due to constant comparison of one’s life against another’s highly curated life posts and stories, binging news and content across media that provoke negative thoughts and diminish self-confidence. Hence it is always important to take a step back and reconnect with nature.
Nature is a powerful antidote to anxiety and here are some of the reasons why.
While it is widely known that being in nature helps to reduce stress (by lowering the levels of cortisol, the stress hormone) anxiety (by calming the nervous system) and improve your mood (by increasing serotonin levels), it also helps with other areas of your mind, body and soul. Which we will briefly explore below to give you a little insight into the whys and hows.
Gives you a Dopamine Boost
Exposure to natural light, specially sunlight, can boost your serotonin and dopamine levels, neurotransmitters linked to mood regulation. So you no longer have to go the extra mile of baking cookies (which you should keep doing if that is something you enjoy) and other activities for a dopamine boost, you can simply step outdoors and go for a walk in the daylight. This also helps lower your cortisol levels, (stress hormone) and gives you a dose of motivation so you can keep doing what you love, achieving your goals and excelling at what you do best.
A Boost for your Immunity System
Nature offers a sanctuary for the mind, body, and soul. Fresh air is often less contaminated than indoor air and it is known that breathing fresh air can generate bacteria to fight off pathogens. Vitamin D helps fight off infections and absorbs calcium, which you can get plenty of when stepping outdoors in sunlight, (combine it with an extra dose of vitamin sea for added benefits). Inhaling phytoncides (released by plants) can also increase immune cells that help fight infection.
A Positive Boost for your Mood
It is said that the sound of flowing water and nature can be incredibly calming. So this coming holiday season take time off to immerse yourself in a forest environment or a natural green space, spend time near bodies of water, such as lakes, rivers, or ocean to soothe and rejuvenate your senses. Altogether, sights, sounds and smells of nature will bring immense calmness to your wellbeing.
