What is walk-and-talk therapy?

Outdoor walk-and-talk therapy allows the therapist and client to communicate in a natural outdoor setting while walking. The principles underpinning walk-and-talk therapy match that of traditional face-to-face sessions, where the main goal is to work together to solve problems and improve relationships, leading to personal growth.

Why might I like to try walking therapy as an alternative?

Specific clients find it easier to open up and communicate while walking with their therapist, as oppose to sitting in a traditional face-to-face interaction.  Another key benefit is that the backdrop of a beautiful or dramatic landscape, such as the Lakes, provides a unique backdrop for insightful dialogue and introspection.

Being outdoors can also enhance the connection with nature and the surrounding environment. If desired, this environment also allows for chances to practice grounding and mindfulness exercises.

Physical activity such as walking also provides secondary mental and physical health benefits, even though this is considered a secondary advantage. Walking outside can reduce stress, help solve problems, and make clients feel more comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings.  Should you be interested, our Blog section will assist you in finding out more on this fascinating topic.

How will it work?

The walks may be circular or involve turning back to the starting point, depending on the route chosen. Routes will also offer opportunities to pause and reflect.  Counselling sessions will be taken at the host venue, on the trail or even after the weekend.  This can be decided by guests closer to the time or at the beginning of the programme.

How is it different to being in the room?

The key difference is there is less direct eye contact when walking side-by-side compared to face-to-face sessions.  Some clients prefer this as it can feel less intense and make it easier for them to engage in therapy.

Confidentiality is another difference when walk and talk therapy. However, we prioritise confidentiality and also discuss with guests how we can preserve this at the beginning of the programme. For instance, when encountering someone on the trail, the therapist will pause the conversation but also ensure we can quickly return to it.

Do I need special equipment?

No special equipment is required.  However, It is best to wear weather-appropriate clothing and accessories.  We will of course send you a kit list well in advance should you decide to join us.

Do I need to be fit?

No.  We walk at a measured, comfortable pace at low level.  The therapists keeps track of time, being mindful of guests and when may be best to return to the starting point.  The therapists decide on one of the pre-approved routes in advance, considering general suitability for the guests joining us.  If there are any medical concerns, we would advise speaking to your GP about these prior signing up.

What if the weather is bad?

We will proceed with the walks in most weathers within reason.  However, we will shuffle aspects of the weekend itinerary to ensure the best weather windows.
